Safety Mission

Saint Paul’s College is concerned about the safety and welfare of all campus members and guests and is committed to providing a safe and secure environment because no campus is isolated from crime, Saint Paul’s College has developed a series of Policies and Procedures that are designed to ensure that every possible precautionary measure is taking to protect persons on campus. Although we have been fortunate in not experiencing a significant number of serious crimes, we realize that crimes of all nature do exist to reasonably prevent such incidents, a competent and trained Public Safety Department is present. Nevertheless, faculty, staff and students are responsible for following a number of measures to ensure that they and their possessions are adequately protected.

The college’s landscaped 75-acre campus is located in Lawrenceville, Virginia, within easy driving distance of population centers in both Virginia and North Carolina.

Saint Paul’s College is “a private, historically black, accredited, four year Episcopal-related, coeducational liberal arts institution of higher learning; with strong programs in, humanities, business, the sciences, mathematics, teacher education, an adult education program called Extended and Continuing Studies Organizational Management Program and our Single Parent Support System program.

The Department of Public Safety reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs. At Saint Paul’s College safety is a primary consideration in the maintenance, grounds-keeping and lighting of the campus. If Public Safety should discover a broken window or non-functional light, they inform the Physical Plant Department. The Public Safety Department also works closely with the Student Affairs Office to ensure that safety policies and procedures are uniformly executed and conveyed in a clear and consistent manner to the college’s students, faculty and staff.

The Department of Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety is located in The Fine Arts Building. Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Department aids in enforcement of federal, state and local statutes and Saint Paul’s Colleges’ regulations.

The Department of Public Safety is responsible for law enforcement, security and emergency response at Saint Paul’s College. It is also responsible for providing support services such as:

To register and provide parking registration for students, faculty and staff.

To test and maintain all fire prevention equipment and alarms.

To assist campus motorists with minor vehicle problems.

To inspect buildings for safety compliance.

Enforcement of state and federal statutes.

Enforcement of state traffic violations.

The Department maintains a close working relationship with all appropriate law enforcement agencies and elements of the criminal justice system,

Crime Reporting

Numerous efforts are made to advise members or the campus community on a timely basis about campus crimes and crime-related problems. These efforts include the following:

Annual Report: A comprehensive annual report of crime-related in information is compiled, published and widely distributed. This annual report is available to all members of the college and the community.

Access to Campus Facilities

Most campus buildings and facilities are accessible to members of the campus community and to guests and visitors during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, and for limited designated hours on Saturday during periods of time the college is in normal operation (this includes most holidays).

Residential Facilities and Policies

Live-in supervisors and, resident assistants serve all facilities. At least one professional staff member is on duty at all times, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The varied types of housing available and the policies and procedure for housing assignments, building and roommate selection and guest access are described more thoroughly in the Resident Handbook.

Public Safety policies and procedures, especially regarding locking individual rooms, building entrances and related precautions are discussed with residents in crime prevention seminars, in routine floor meetings conducted by the residence staff and in printed materials which are posted and distributed by the staff. During holidays and other periods in the academic year when classes are not in session, some or all of the residence facilities are closed. Those few students authorized to live on campus during that time are registered with the Residence Office and Department of Public Safety. Special security procedures are established for resident facilities during these periods.

Sexual Offense Policy

Saint Paul’s College students have a right to live in an environment free from sexual harassment and/or assault. If a student experiences any circumstance that can be interpreted as a sexual offense, that student should report the situation to the campus security authorities. In this case, campus security authorities may be the Department of Public Safety or the Student Affairs Office. The student also has the option to notify the proper law enforcement authorities and the option to be assisted by campus authorities in notifying such authorities.

STUDENT PARKING

Parking Decals $20.00

All motor vehicles owned or possessed by students on campus must be registered in the Business Office of the College.  Vehicles must be properly registered and the appropriate sticker must be displayed prior to being parked on College property.  Special parking areas are provided for students; parking in other areas is prohibited.
