The Center for Academic Support Services (CASS) embraces all students enrolled at Saint Paul’s College, but targets the Freshman students to foster an appropriate transition to college.

The CASS Director manages, coordinates and implements the Freshman Orientation class which helps students to adjust to college life. The Center for Academic Support Services monitors students’ academic advisory and academic performance. Our objective is to assist students in offering appropriate resources and services to adapt to the academic, environmental and social demands of your first year at college. Beginning with orientation class, students are exposed to the college’s history and offer an array of various services that can be tailored to students’ specific interests and accommodations. CASS also offers strategies on how to thrive in your Freshmen year of college, and conduct forums to inspire and challenge students to aim high.

CASS collaborates with local community resource agencies, the Art Bank, other HBCU colleges and all departments campus-wide.

Upon entering Saint Paul’s College all Freshmen students are required to take a Placement assessment. This assessment is administered to each student as an appropriate academic placement and selection of majors for our students. After the initial placement/entry assessment, a follow-up of advisory is implemented. Freshmen students are required to attend the CASS Lab for tutoring, counseling, and technical support. This allows each student to have the maximum opportunity to be academically and holistically successful at Saint Paul’s College.

The Academic Counselor is located in the Center for Academic Support Services. The Counselor at Saint Paul’s College recognizes the need for counseling as a major function in the development of students. The counselor addresses student academia, personal problems, adjustment to college life, and social skill development which are frequent concerns for many of today’s college students.

 The CASS Counselor offers the following:

Distribution of social, cultural information and brochures

The Director continues to research and incorporate new strategies for student involvement and positive student outcomes in all genres of the college.

Academic Advising  As a student at Saint Paul’s College, you cannot hope to take full advantage of the flexibility of the academic plan without seeking the advice of the faculty and staff.   Such advice is available from a variety of sources.

General advice on program planning is available from the Director of Student Support Services, Director of General Studies or the Office of the College Counselor if you have not declared a major.  If you have declared a major, the department chair of your major field, or your appointee/faculty advisor, acts as your advisor.

You are required to consult your advisor for assistance in proper program planning and in registration for academic work and are urged to keep your advisor informed of your academic progress through periodic conferences.  Seniors are usually advised by their department chairs.
