17-year-old Florida teen, Trayvon Martin

Student Government Association President, Krystal Humphreys announces that the students, faculty, and staff of Saint Paul’s College (SPC) will attend a rally for Trayvon Martin on the campus of SPC, Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 3 p.m. in front of the cafeteria.

They’re asking people to show up wearing hoodies.

On February 26, 2012, Martin, a17-year-oldFloridateen, was gunned down by his neighbor, George Zimmerman, who says he felt threatened by him.  Investigators say Martin was unarmed. Zimmerman was never arrested or charged, and that’s what has created a National controversy.

Rallies have been held across the country and the calls for justice have caused the police chief to temporarily step down.

The community is encouraged to attend the rally.

Saint Paul's College CEO and Interim President, Eddie N. Moore, Jr. accepts a donation on behalf of First Mount Zion Baptist Church from Saint Paul's College Trustee, Howard W. Gholson, Ph.D.

Saint Paul’s College is the proud recipient of a $10,000 gift from Pastor Luke E. Torian, delegate representing Virginia’s 52^nd District and his congregation at First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, VA.

Saint Paul’s College Trustees, Eric Williams and Howard W. Gholson, Ph.D. were instrumental in reaching out to the Church that has a congregation of over 4,000 members and over 50 ministers who minister within the congregation and also through the Church’s outreach ministries.

“It’s touching to have religious organizations of all denominational backgrounds believe in and support Saint Paul’s College.  The entire College family is grateful for this generous donation,” said Saint Paul’s College CEO and Interim President, Eddie N. Moore, Jr.

Longwood University’s, Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, Deneese  L. Jones, Ph.D. will serve as the guest speaker.  Jones began her service as Professor and Dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Longwood University on June 25, 2005.

Jones earned her Ph. D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on literacy instruction and her Master of Education degree in the same discipline from Texas A&M University. Her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education is from Texas Woman’s University. A native of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Jones moved to Farmville from the University of Kentucky at Lexington, KY where she devoted fourteen years of her educational expertise at the state, national, and international level.

Honors Day is a day in which students of Saint Paul’s College are honored with academic and performance awards/scholarships.  The community is encouraged to attend the service.

The weekend kicks off on Saturday, March 10, 2012 with the Founders’ Day banquet which will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Student Union on campus. Tickets are $20.00 and can be purchased from the College’s cashier’s office located in the William H. Scott Administration Building or at the door the night of the event.

Founders’ Day Convocation will be held Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Paul’s Memorial Chapel. Guest speaker for convocation is the great granddaughter of Archdeacon James Solomon Russell, Judith K. Deane-Cisco.

Celebrating 124 years of existence, Saint Paul’s College was founded by the late Archdeacon James Solomon Russell as a way to educate freed slaves and offer educational opportunities not afforded to Blacks at White institutions during the days of legally mandated segregation.

The community is invited and encouraged to celebrate Founders’ Day Weekend.

The College has an opportunity to receive a $50,000 grant to restore the Hospitality House located at the entrance of the campus; a $25,000 grant to upgrade the outdoor student commons area located at the center of the campus with landscaping such as, improved seating and brickwork, and, repair and upgrade to its centerpiece, the Saint Paul’s College Fountain; or a $10,000 grant to create a warm welcome to the College by upgrading the landscaping and beauty of the entrance to our beloved Campus.
